Kniphofia

Growing Kniphofia

Dramatic flower spikes in fiery oranges and yellows and practically indestructible. The Kniphofia plants which once had a poor reputation are now to be seen adding an exotic touch in many designer gardens.

Look for varieties where the darker orange at the tip blends into a lighter orange at the base rather than the more old fashioned varieties where there is a harsh contrast of bright orange and yellow. Kniphofia ‘Nancy’s Red’ is a great variety with coral-red flowers, it stays relatively compact and flowers from mid-summer until autumn.

Kniphofia are great for virtually any garden not being fussy about conditions and they are totally hardy.

Divide by digging up the clump and separating out the individual plants. Trim back the old leaves and replant. Best carried out in spring or autumn.

For real drama try the huge Kniphofia uvaria ‘Noblis’, 240 cm high, or for a more subtle look try the lemon coloured ‘Little Maid’ which as the name suggests is smaller at about 60cm in height.
