If you are looking for an exotic climber then Campsis is the one to choose. Once it is established it grows at an enormous rate and in summer it is smothered in gorgeous deep orange tubular flowers and glossy green leaves.
It looks magnificent teamed up with other exotic plants such as bananas, Fatsia japonica and Acanthus.
Madame Galen is the hardiest cultivar but plant somewhere sheltered to be on the safe side. A south-facing well would be best.
Campsis needs to be planted in full sun in order to ‘ripen’ the new growth and enable flowering. It is not too fussy about soil types.
It is a very vigorous climber so give it plenty of room to spread out. It can, however, be pruned back quite hard at the end of winter and will still send out plenty of new growth in the spring.
The flowers will appear between August and September, maybe earlier in a hot summer.
