Bougainvillea originates from the tropical regions of south America. It is now found widely in the tropical and semi-tropical regions and Australia, South Africa, the Mediterranean countries and the southern states of the USA.
It is of course the pink flowers that are the highlight of a Bougainvillea, an unforgettable sight on holidays where it can be seen sprawling all over whitewashed sun-drenched buildings - some of the best we have seen is in the villages around Ramatuelle in Provence..
Because of its sensitivity to cold it is prohibited for many of us..
...which is a shame because it is one of the most attractive plants/flowers I know. However as with many of the plants on this site it will thrive in a conservatory, or in a sunny position where it can be taken inside during the cold months, emerging during the summer to bathe your terrace in an explosion of colour.
It will suffer at temperatures below 10 c so really does need to be indoors early for many of us, and the conservatory might need to be heated!

In the right (warm) conditions the plant grows quite easily - it doesn't need excessive watering and will produce a magnificent display of flowers all summer.
