Fatsia japonica plants
Fatsia japonica has large, glossy, palmate leaves and is perfect for a shady corner in an exotic garden. It grows into a large shrub and in late summer has cream-coloured flowers followed by black berries.
It is the size and glossiness of the leaves that make this such a great garden plant and gives it its jungle-like appearance.
Plant with Canna lillies to increase its exotic appeal.
Fatsia is fully hardy though frost can damage the leaves and it is best planted somewhere sheltered for this reason. Young plants should be planted in spring to give them chance to establish before their first frosts.
Fatsia is very versatile as it can be planted in full sun or shade and copes well with both. It is also not fussy about soil type though it grows best in a heavy soil. It will also be fine in a seaside garden, unlike many plants. In times of drought keep it well watered.
Cuttings can be taken in mid to late summer, the young plants will need protecting over the winter before being planted the following spring.
Fatsia japonica also make great house plants. There is even a variegated form Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’ which is really too tender to grow outside but is lovely as a house plant. When grown in pots water a little in winter, frequently in the growing season and feed monthly in the growing season.
Fatsia japonica has received the RHSs Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
