Crocosmia

Growing Crocosmia

These small bulbs give rise to tall plants with wonderful intense fiery coloured flowers. From bright yellow to a lovely deep red and with a whole range of oranges.

Crocosmia is fabulous for providing vivid spots of colour in the garden. Plant in large drifts to give a real exotic feel to your garden.

Although the stems look delicate with the flower heads on the end of the tall stems they do not need staking. They also make great cut flowers.

Crocosmia (also known as Montbretia) can be bought cheaply as bulbs in the autumn and will flower the same year in the summer. Plant in well drained soil in sun or light shade. They are hardy but if you experience very cold winters it is worth mulching with straw in the winter.

The bulbs will increase by themselves and once the clump is looking congested divide and re-plant in small groups in the spring at a depth of about 8cm. Add plenty of garden compost at the same time to give them a good start.

Crocosmia Lucifer is a firm favourite with its bright red flowers on long arching stems.

For a more unusual variety try Crocosmia ‘Emily Mckenzie’ whose flowers are larger than is usual for crocosmia and they are bright orange splashed with red.
