Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea originates from the tropical regions of south America. It is now found widely in the tropical and semi-tropical regions and Australia, South Africa, the Mediterranean countries and the southern states of the USA.
It is of course the pink flowers that are the highlight of a Bougainvillea, an unforgettable sight on holidays where it can be seen sprawling all over whitewashed sun-drenched buildings.
Because of its sensitivity to cold it is prohibited for many of us. Which is a shame because it is one of the most attractive plants/flowers I know. However as with many of the plants on this site it will thrive in a conservatory, or in a sunny position where it can be taken inside during the cold months.
It will suffer at temperatures below 10 c so really does need to be indoors early for many of us, and the conservatory might need to be heated!
In the right (warm) conditions the plant grows quite easily - it doesn't need excessive watering and will produce a magnificent display of flowers all summer.
