Agapanthus

Growing Agapanthus

Agapanthus is a great plant to add structure and an exotic touch to the garden. Usually seen in shades of blue and purple though there are white flowering varieties too. The flowers are in the form of umbels where lots of small tubular flowers are held together in a large globe.

The plants come from South Africa originally and many are not fully hardy and are best suited to growing in pots. Though there is an increasingly large range of hardier varieties available and it is worth trying these in a fairly sheltered spot in your garden. It tends to be the deciduous species that are more hardy and suitable for planting in the garden.

If you are growing Agapanthus in pots keep them sheltered in winter but from spring onwards put them in a sunny spot otherwise they will not flower. Keep them watered in autumn when the flower buds are forming.

When growing in the ground they need a well-drained soil, preferably not too rich as this can encourage weak growth.

Look out for Agapanthus ‘Black Pantha’ whose purple flowers are almost black. It is of only borderline hardiness and so best kept in containers.
